Attorney Spotlight – Laura Hagan

Laura HaganLaura M. Hagan attorney Louisville, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee grew up in New Haven, located in central Kentucky.  She graduated from Nelson County High School and later attend the University of Kentucky where she received a Bachelor of Health Science in 1987.  After graduation, Laura spent three years working in the hematology and blood bank laboratories at the UK Medical Center and also worked as a research assistant in the laboratory of the Lexington VA Medical Center. She started UK law school in 1990 and received her J.D. degree in 1993.

Because of Laura’s bachelor’s degree in health science, she was able to sit for the Patent Bar Examination and she is one of the few attorneys between Louisville, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee that is licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.  Her practice is focused on assisting clients with their intellectual property needs involving patent, trademark and copyright matters.  Laura has experience in preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications and provides opinions and representation, relating to infringement and/or validity of patents or trademark registrations.  Much of Laura’s practice includes the preparation and negotiation of license agreements and other contracts related to intellectual property matters.

Laura is a frequent presenter on intellectual property matters to local bar associations and various other civic organizations.  She currently serves as Chair for the Boards of the Western Kentucky University Research Foundation and the WKU Child Care Centers.  She also is a member of the Executive Board of The Community Foundation and in past has served as the Chair of the Board for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store and the Bardstown Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Laura is married to Eric Smith and they have three daughters, Morgan, Karen and Erica.  Laura and Eric have enjoyed watching their daughters participate in various sporting activities throughout the years.  They also like to spend time boating at Barren River Lake and traveling when they have an opportunity.  Laura is a dedicated runner, who enjoys pounding the pavement with her running group and doing an occasional race.
